Our cool engineering students

The Waterloo Engineering Society is excited to support two awards for engineering faculty members at the University of Waterloo.

Our priorities are to recognize staff members, lecturers, professors, lab instructors and other faculty who advocate on behalf of students and go above and beyond in the support of the success of students

Friend of Natalie Award (formerly Friend of the Society Award)

Natalie was a passionate advocate and supporter of mental health at UW who devoted much of her time to improving and expanding the mental health resources available to undergraduate students. The initial creation of this award in Winter 2018 was a direct result of her initiative (Winter 2018 Council Meeting 5, Meeting Minutes)

The award recognizes a faculty/staff member (this includes TAs and lab instructors) from the faculty of Engineering for their contributions to improving the mental health of their students.

More specifically, the award recognizes an instructor who has:

  1. Advocating on behalf of students to eliminate elements that have a negative effects of student mental health
  2. Showing a long-term commitment and vested interest to the betterment of student mental health
  3. Taking action to directly improve the mental health of students

Please note the instructor must be a faculty member or staff of the Engineering Faculty (This does not include most MATH or PHYS faculty/staff members).

The Engineering Society “Friend of the Natalie” Award committee accepts nominations for outstanding Waterloo Engineering Faculty and Staff Members every term!

One honouree is selected per term for the Engineering Society “Friend of the Natalie” Award and their names are added to the plaque found in the CPH foyer.

This committee then goes on to put together packages to nominate faculty and staff members for Faculty and University-wide awards.

More specifically, the award recognizes an instructor who has:

  1. Employed non-conventional teaching techniques
  2. Allowed opportunities for experiential learning
